Social Pug Profile | Spanky
It is that time again where you get to know a pug from the social media scene in our popular Social Pug Profile series. This week it is awesome Spanky. Get to know Spanky in his interview.
Nicknames: Spankenstein, SpankyLou, (short for Spanky Lewis, my middle name) James Franco (when the family is deciding on names and a daughter picks one that sticks for a lifetime haha) and finally, The Cool Dad – a nickname earned on Instagram because it suits my persona and my look perfectly…a little nerdy, but I can be still be hip!
Birth date or Gotcha Date:
Born on 4/25/08 in New Hampshire
Where do you live?
I am very lucky and live both a city life plunk in the heart of Nashville TN and a quiet New England country life in a small town outside Boston Massachusetts. Both have their fair share of wildlife, both literally and figuratively, and I have a pretty strict on-leash-life.
What is your favourite time of the day?
Well of course all the meal times are my favorite times of day but I suppose that’s a given. Hmmm.. Evenings. That’s when I typically have lots of laps to choose from and when I settle in front of the tv or fireplace with my bully stick. I like having everyone in sight and I love having my family around. I also enjoy tv quite a bit, and theres a special dog-sized chaise lounge set in front of it that I will run to, if I hear horses galloping or my favorite commercials. I also enjoy watching animal videos on Youtube.
What is your favourite food?
I pride myself in being somewhat of a cheeseburger aficionado! I have tasted many of the great and famous cheeseburger-y goodness from all over. If I can’t be there in person, my folks will bring one home just for me. (After all, isn’t that what doggy bags are for?) I have a dream of touring our country and sampling cheeseburgers in every state.
However, holiday dinners are very special and we have a holiday tradition that started when I was just a puppy. Mom gave me a full place setting with china at the Thanksgiving table and that seat remained empty until all guests had finished their dinners. Once they excused themselves, I was invited up to the table and I was served a sampling of everything on the menu that was dog friendly to my tummy. I got a dollop of EVERYTHING. And to this day, there is a setting for both me and my sister at every single holiday meal. I have repeatedly been told that I have impeccable table manners. I wait in my chair until I’m told I may begin and only my front paws go on the table. I can hardly contain myself when I see activity being set up in the dining room because I know what’s coming!
I may not get the whole cheeseburger with the bun nor the pickles, nor do I ever get a bone to gnaw on or anything over bite size (mom cuts everything so tiny) but it’s just a taste and a very special occasion when I do, and I’m okay with that! When all is said and done, I have the same enthusiasm for my Wellness kibble that I do for people food!
Do you have a toy that you can’t live without?
I love all my toys equally. But if I find a shoe laying around, I like to carry those to my bed and sleep with them. I’ve never chewed on a shoe – I just snuggle them. If you come to visit, I will meet you at the door with a shoe and I’d like you to get a good look at it, so I will walk in circles around you with it. It’s the funniest thing.
What do you hate the most?
This was a tough one to answer because I’m such an easy going guy and rarely ever put up a fuss. But in the last few years, I’ve decided I don’t like my liquid seizure medication. (I have a rare form of epilepsy – cluster seizures – and am on meds for my life, four times a day.) I have learned which times of day the medicine alarm goes off at that I get my pill and I come running because those come in a tasty meatball. But the other two times of day, I will trot off and hide under a kitchen chair or my crate.
What do you love the most?
This is easy – my mom. I stare at her alllll the time and like to have her in my sight. It’s a tough job being her body guard but I love it.
Do you have any bad habits?
I get very excited at the start of a car ride and will bark, bark, bark until the car hits cruising speed!
What do you think is your best quality?
Without a doubt, my double curl cinnamon bun tail. Recently mom took a short silly close-up video of my wagging it and posted it on Instagram and it got 41 thousand views!
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day is dictated by my medicine schedule so every morning I’m up by 6:00 am to take my first dose. After breakfast, there’s nothing better than taking a short nap. I like to work as many of those in as possible. If I’m in Nashville, there’s always an adventure to go on or a dog friendly patio to visit. If I’m home, I have a big yard to play in and woods to walk in. At some point in every day, my little sister needs to bug me or take something of mine so I usually go stare at mom – my way of tattling. Each day I try to work in a good leg licking session and some time with my bully stick. Hygiene is important so I daily rub my face down on any clean laundry or blankets I can find. Fireplace weather is underway in New England so I always make sure I stretch out and get good and toasty every evening. And finally, throughout my day, mom follows me around with her camera, snapping pictures for our social media accounts. Always with the camera….every day.
What has been the most fun adventure you have been on?
Oh, there have been so many but if I had to pick just one great pug adventure, it would be traveling with all my friends to great destinations as part of the Meet The Pugs gang on Twitter and Instagram. I recently went to New York City and that trip was amazing! And seeing all my social media pals was the BEST! It’s very rare that I am left behind at home or with a sitter because of my medical needs so I probably get packed up and get to go to more places than most and that works out as a win win for me!
What do you love most about having a sibling?
This is just between you and me, right? Because I try to keep up the appearance of being indifferent towards her. But fact is, she keeps me young. Darla is a very, very smart girl and she keeps me on my toes, because you never know what she’s going to do next. She also tricks me in very clever ways – like running to the door and barking like somebody is there and the minute I join her, she runs back and takes the toy I had and runs away with it. She will engage me in running and romping and she can get snuggly and pug pile on me. I pretend I don’t care but truth is, she’s kinda cozy and I never budge.
