Who are Homeward Bound Pug Rescue?
We are an all volunteer, not for profit organization dedicated to the Pug breed. We want to give every unwanted Pug in Oklahoma and neighboring states a second chance. Our mission is to place Pugs that have been surrendered, abandoned, or abused into loving and caring forever homes.

Homeward Bound will accept each and every Pug: mixed, ill, elderly, alpha, all ages, all sizes and colors – any Pug needing a home. We never turn a Pug away. For us, this is the essence of Pug rescue – to truly rescue Pugs. We frequently save Pugs from high-kill shelters as well as accepting owner relinquishments.

Upon receiving a Pug, they are placed in foster care with dedicated volunteers. Evaluation and veterinary care are included. Many dogs come through Homeward Bound with heartworms, elongated soft palate, eye problems, and other health issues.

We neither breed nor do we show pugs. Our mission differs from most breeders and show people for whom the primary focus is on conformation to the breed standard and competition. At Homeward Bound, our mission is to see to it that every Pug in need finds a loving home.

Who is behind Homeward Bound Pug Rescue and why did you start it?
Gail Tucker is the founder. The rescue began with her own pug. She fell in love with the breed but discovered that many people in Oklahoma were abandoning their pugs to kill shelters because they no longer wanted them, or couldn’t afford their care. She decided to dedicate her life to saving as many pugs as possible.

How many pugs have you rescued and successfully re-homed?
We have found forever homes for over 1,000 pugs and hospice fostered several hundred due to age or severe medical issues.

How can someone make a financial donation and how does this money get used to help pugs?
Donations can be sent through the link on our website (www.homewardboundpugs.com) or directly through PayPal to homewardboundpugs@cox.net All donations go towards vetting, vaccines, heartworm tests, spay/neuter, and treating any medical ailments such as dental cleaning and extractions, heartworm treatment, or any number of injuries and medical issues that were caused by the previous owner’s neglect of the pug. We often post about specific pugs in need on our Facebook and Instagram pages. To see an example of a successful rescues you can visit our Instagram page @homeward_bound_pug_rescue, where we regularly post photos sent to us from adopters. Our most famous rescue is Pee Wee, who has been featured in news stories and magazines. He has his own Instagram page at @peeweesbigpugventure

How can someone volunteer with Homeward Bound Pug Rescue and what types of voluntary positions do you need?
Please contact us at homewardboundpugs@cox.net for more information. We need fosters, and volunteers to help with picking up pugs from either the shelter or vet and transporting them to the foster home. In a pinch we sometimes need a volunteer to pick up medicine and bring it to the director’s house. We also need volunteers for our monthly meetups and at our yearly fundraiser.

What does it take to be a foster carer with Homeward Bound Pug Rescue?
We need someone who is willing to work with the pug to get them used to living in a loving home. This can sometimes include house training and basic manners. No prior pug or foster experience needed, but we do need the foster to be available once a month to come to our Meet and Greets so that potential adopters can visit with the pugs. We provide all medical care and medication if needed, but we ask that you supply the recommended food. Our foster application is can be found on our website!

How can someone adopt a pug from Homeward Bound Pug Rescue? What is the process and requirements?
Our adoption application is on our website! The full process and requirements are found on the home page of the application form. We do require that all of your pets be fully vaccinated, neutered/spayed, and dogs on heartworm preventative, and will call the veterinarian to verify. We will call and talk with you and two references, and also meet you in person at your home so that we can get to know you and see the environment the pug will be living in. The process may seem long and complicated, but the last thing we want is a pug returned to us because we didn’t make a good match. We want your home to be their forever home and will do everything we can to make sure that happens.
