Pet Friendly Accommodation | Mercure Hotel Canberra

I had my first experience with pet friendly accommodation when we travelled to Canberra 2 weeks ago for A Pooch Affair. And to be honest, I just wasn’t sure how it would go. It did go well otherwise I wouldn’t tell you all about this pet friendly accommodation in Canberra

We stayed at the Mercure Hotel in Braddon, just on the outskirts of Canberra CBD on the northside. But definitely within walking distance of Lake Burley Griffin, well part of it anyway since it is rather big. And we were pretty much within a 15 minute driving distance of most things in Canberra like Yarralumla Dog Park and EPIC where A Pooch Affair was held. And whilst the major tourist attractions aren’t dog friendly to enter, most were easily accessible for the tourist style photos for Ref including Parliament House, Black Mountain Tower and War Memorial which was just a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

The Booking Process

There was enough information on the Mercure Hotel website that made me want to book our 2 night stay with them. I just had to check on a couple of things before booking. I gave them a call and they were very helpful in answering my questions, specifically with pets on furniture in the room. And with the go ahead with no issues of pets on furniture and being able to add an extra single bed to the room (the rooms is just a king bed but there were 3 of us plus Ref), I was ready to book. A second phone call to make the booking and in less than 10 minutes, I had secured 1 of the 2 pet friendly rooms for the hotel. The pet friendly rooms can only be booked via phone but with a quick booking process, it was no issue at all.

What was included with the room?

There are just 2 pet friendly rooms at Mercure Hotel, Canberra but they are very good rooms. The pet friendly room package is for 2 people and their pet. But I easily added a single bed to the room for a bit extra per night. I was told that it would be squishy adding the single bed but that was an exaggeration with loads of room for the king bed as well as the single bed and everything else in the room. Included in the pet friendly room package was:

  • King size bed
  • Full buffet or room service breakfast for 2
  • Access to an enclosed garden
  • Bedding for your pet
  • Food/water bowl for your pet
  • A complimentary gift for your pet to take home

When I added the additional single bed for the room, it also included a full buffet or room service breakfast.

Are there any restrictions?

There are some restrictions to having your pet with you at Mercure Hotel but they are very reasonable. All that they ask of you and your pet is the following:

  • Your pet be leashed in all public areas and entry/exit to the hotel
  • Do not leave your pet unattended anywhere in the hotel including the room
  • Your pet is not allowed in the 2 designated food areas

Not unreasonable at all. And definitely miles better than most pet friendly accommodation that only allow pets inside on hard floor areas or outside only.

Verdict

I was definitely more than happy with our stay at Mercure Hotel Canberra. The room was very spacious even with the additional bed. The enclosed garden was completely secured and spacious so Ref could wander around and go to the toilet when needed. The hotel has a modern vintage style about it that was warm and welcoming. Whilst Ref wasn’t allowed in the 2 designated food areas, there was seating just outside those areas in the warmth and comfort of the hotel that we could sit and dine with Ref. There were also some great vintage pieces of furniture that made good backdrops for photos of Ref to remember his stay at the hotel. There was only just the one downfall of our stay and that was when we checked into the room, the original booking didn’t have the pet box ticked to ensure the bed, bowl and gift for Ref were in the room. And unfortunately, whilst I had told them, we went the whole stay without a bed or bowl for Ref. I had brought everything I needed for Ref with me but it would have been nice to have the things for Ref that were included with the package I paid for.

Even with the little downfall of Ref not getting a bed, bowl and gift, I still highly recommend staying at Mercure Hotel Canberra should you need some pet friendly accommodation in Canberra. They are friendly, welcoming and it was a very comfortable stay. Ref and I give it 4.5 paws out of 5 paws!
