An Open Letter to My Pug
Leading up to the festive season and a new year, I know I like to think about the previous year and how things have gone for me. This year has been an interesting year but the one constant in my life has been my own pug, Ref. So here I am reflecting on how this amazing little boy has been the light of my life for yet another year. And if I was to write a letter to him, this is what it would say…
As we come to the end of another year together, I wanted to sit down and write you a letter telling you how much you have improved my life and just how much I love you.
Every morning I stir when you wake up some time around 6am. I don’t open my eyes but I smile as I hear you stretch, scratch, yawn and shake as you fully wake up. You then jump off the bed to let me know to get up and so our day begins.
I love our morning routine. You head out the doggy door to go to the loo and come racing back inside with so much excitement for your pending breakfast. I make up your morning feast and now that you are on a full raw diet, I love watching you eat your chicken neck with your tail wagging.
I love that you always greet mum and dad or just dad if it’s a work day once you’ve had your feed. And then you come back to bed with me and all within 15 minutes of waking up. I love that on a weekend you will more than likely spend a couple of hours in bed with mum.
I love that these days you will stay in bed whilst I get up and have breakfast, unless of course it is the weekend and you sit at the table with us. And on the weekend, I love that you will just sit at the table whilst we eat and not even make an attempt at our food. I love that you know the rules.
I love that you enjoy just lounging around all day as long as you are with me. I hate when I have to leave you at home. I wish you could go everywhere with me. And why? Because you make me smile. You make me happy. You wipe my worries away. You light up my life.
I love that you have a nightly routine too. You start to hassle me anywhere from 5pm cause you want your dinner. You don’t stop until you either end up in timeout or we start cooking dinner. And then you just sit in the kitchen, usually in the way, whilst we cook dinner. You love your dinner as much as your breakfast. Which part you like best, who knows. It could be your fresh food, your carrot or your dental chew. But you expect them all in that order.
I love that you are sound asleep, usually on mum’s lap, within the hour of having dinner. I love the way you snuggle into mum and then steal her chair once she moves. I love that without a doubt, every single night, I have to carry you to the doggy door, make you walk outside, lock the doggy door and tell you to go to the toilet before bed. And 99% of the time you do. I love that you love to snuggle into my chest, under the blanket in winter or on the pillow next to me. And our routine will start again.
But most of all, I love that you let me photograph you. You let me dress you up. You let me create the images I have in my head. You let me combine my passion of photography and love of you to create these amazing memories I will never forget.
I love that you melt my heart every single day. I love that you have improved my sleeping pattern. I love that you are always so excited to see me when I get home. I love that you let me give you hugs and kisses. I love that you’ll give me kisses when I ask. I love everything about you. I just love you!
Love from your mummy
